What's Included

A Pretied FATKAT Rig including:

(1) FATKAT Bobber

(1) Eco-Friendly Steel Sinker

(1) Snelled Catfish Circle Hook

(1) Bobber Stop & Bead

10 ft of 50 lb Test Leader

Dimensions

FATKAT™ Bobber

Diameter: 2 in

Height: 4 in

Weight: 1 oz

How To Set Up

1. Tie it on

Use the included 10 ft leader and connect it to your main line with a double uni knot (step-by-step guide above). That knot sets your bait depth.

2. Watch the drift

If the FATKAT lays sideways, your bait is dragging on the bottom — your leader’s too long.

Shorten it by tying an overhand knot a foot or so higher up the leader.

3. Dial it in

Keep adjusting until the FATKAT floats upright. Now you’re perfectly suspended in the strike zone — where the big ones bite.

FATKAT Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Get Started?

How does the FATKAT rig work?

1. Tie it on

Use a double uni knot or FG Knot to connect your main line to the 10 ft leader.

2. Cast + Drift
Toss it into current and open your bail.

3. Watch Your FATKAT
If it lays sideways, your leaders too long. Slide your bobber stop toward the hook.

Slide until the FATKAT stands up vertical — That's it. Let the current carry your bait naturally into the strike zone and you will get bites.

What setup do you use?

We chase big ones, so we use:

  • 50 lb braided main line
  • The included 50 lb leader
  • Reel - Go to 6000, but size 3000 and above will work
  • Rod - Go to is 9ft Medium Heavy, but Medium and above will work. I have used it on ultralight... but that was just messing around.

Do I need special gear?

Nope. Just tie it on and go.

How do I adjust depth?

Just Slide the Bobber Stop up and down.

Is there a bobber stop?

Yes, it's included in the pre-tied rig.

Do I need a barrel swivel?

I don't recommend. Use a line-to-line knot instead.

What's The Best Way To Fish This Rig?

How do I fish it (tactics)?

🎯 Target moving water

Cast into current — like riffles, seams, or rapids — and let the FATKAT drift naturally. If cats are there, they’ll usually hammer it within 10–15 casts. No bite? Move to a new spot.

🥧 Cover the whole stretch

Fan-cast like you’re slicing a pie. Start far, then work closer in 5 ft at a time. Don’t forget to hit behind boulders and eddies — catfish love hanging in that slack water.

🎣 Keep it natural

Let the FATKAT do its thing. Keep your bail open, your rod tip high, and your line slack.

🚫 Snag tip

If you snag, don’t yank. Walk upstream and then reel down. 9 times out of 10 it’ll pop free. Easy.

🧠 Bait tips

Use what’s local: perch, bluegill, shad — live or cut. Chicken liver and hotdogs work too, but I always use fresh bait when I can.

💪 Make it last

FATKATs are built for water landings! Avoid casting into rocks and logs. If one breaks, don’t sweat it — shoot us an email (jack@topcatchfishing.com) and we’ll make it right.

Can I use live bait?

Absolutely. We’ve used everything from perch to shad to bluegill — all live.

Is it good for lakes?

Yep. In lakes, the FATKAT suspends bait off the bottom and catches wind or subtle underwater currents to drift it around.

In rivers, the current does more of the work — but it performs great either way.

Will it work in deep rivers?

Yes. I have an article all about this: Fishing Deep Rivers with the FATKAT

Do people really use bobbers for catfish?

Oh yeah — but not the dinky red-and-whites from Walmart.

We’re talking FATKAT bobbers — Big, castable, and made for heavy baits and big fish. No better way to fish rivers or lakes when you're targeting catfish.

Will it snag?

I fish a rocky, tree-filled river 3 times a week, from February to November. I used to lose dozens of bottom rigs every season. Since switching to the FATKAT rig, I lose about 3 a year. In 2025 I lost 2.

Here’s why it works:

Snag-Resistant by Design

  • Small Weight
  • Circle hook doesn’t dig into cover like traditional hooks.
  • Bobber and weight actually fight each other — if the sinker tucks under a log, the bobber pulls it back out.

Pro Tip to Free a Snag

If you do snag, just walk upstream and pull. Since the rig floated down, it’ll usually back right out. I save 90% of snags that way — easy.

Bottom line: once you fish this rig, you’ll get it. Most folks say the same thing:

“I’m never going back to bottom rigs.”

What's the FATKAT Made of?

A custom, plant-based material.

  • No foam, no microplastics, no guilt
  • Keeps your waters clean.
  • Built for Water - Avoid casting into rocks or logs
